V & A Museum of Childhood History
Where does the childhood live? The question seems to be rhetorical, but the workers of V & A Museum of Childhood know the answer! It lives here, among toys, children’s clothes and children’s equipment.
First of all the museum was just the branch of Victoria and Albert Museum. When the “elder brother” of this museum became much larger, its branch was brought to East Side. There the items, left after “World Exhibition”, were presented and it was called “Bethnal Green”. The things that were shown in the museum had nothing in common with childhood, and maybe it was the reason, why kids had come here extremely rarely.
The fact, that kids were bored in the museum and tried to leave as soon as possible, was noticed by its new supervisor Author Sabin. He decided to open the room in the museum, where he put exhibits, which could be interesting for children. The Queen of Britain donated a great collection of toys to that “children’s” room and thus children’s collection became much wider and had occupied a larger space. And in 1974 the museum director Roy Strong called “Bethnal Green” a special museum of childhood.
V & A Museum of Childhood Exhibitions
Of course, the major parts of visitors of this museum are children. But nevertheless, adults also come here and not only as supervisors to their sons and daughters, but also by their own will. It was the main aim of the administration of museum – to attract people’s attention to the topic of childhood. All of us used to be children; all of us are going to be parents, so it is necessary to study childhood from top to bottom, to make our children as happy as possible.
Museum of Childhood is situated in two-storied building. It is possible to look about its exposition within three hours. Many things, connected with childhood, are gathered there. But the central collection of the museum consists of toys, of course.
V&A Museum of Childhood East London
In general there are more than 20,000 of toys here. The oldest ones came here from the 13th century. The toys, made by different masters, gathered from various parts of our planet, can impress even the most capricious child. The toys are divided into several sections. The first section consists of dolls. Big and small, handmade and factorial, cheap and extremely expensive, are admired by girls and their moms all the time. Some of dolls have their names; they were bought for small princesses and later were donated by royal parents to the museum.
If the girls stay for hours, looking at dolls, boys admire toy railways. There are thousands of them here – so different, multicolored, very old, but still working.
Soft toys, teddy bears, clock-work dancers and toy cars – everything can be found there, and that’s why children often cry, when must leave this place.
To make children happier, the workers of the museum arrange many entertainments for children. These interactive games are not just interesting, they are important for the fast development of any child.
Take here your son or daughter and they will be happy to play with the jukebox, to catch their reflection in the rocking mirrors or to try on different images and put on one of various old-fashioned hats and dresses. Even the usual sandbox becomes a great entertainment for children of all ages, because here they can relax and meet new friends.
But toys and games are not the only things that can be found here. Clothes for children that came here from various time eras, children’s cribs, pacifiers, diapers and many other things that parents use to raise a healthy and happy child are presented here. The bright world of childhood is opened for adult visitors here. Museum staff is passionate not only about the kids. Special activities for parents are also held here on a regular basis.
